The Ocean Tracking Network
Where We Are Going

Vision

Kintama’s mission is to create a revolution in marine science. By developing a technology for deploying and maintaining an integrated system of thousands of sensors, it is possible to crack open the black box of the ocean in a way never before possible. We envision an integrated system that operates 24/7 every day of the year, along the continental shelf of every continent in the world. With all data compatible and quickly available to all participants, the array will provide an unprecedented ability to establish the movements and survival of aquatic animals.

David's story:

Read it here

A worldwide array of acoustic receivers has the potential to change our understanding of the ocean in the same way that the telephone changed our ability to communicate. Once the technology is there, no one will willingly return to an era of just relying on telegraphs—or trawl surveys.

Kintama was built on the idea that the right technology, ably implemented, can change the world of marine science. Our job is to implement and refine this technology, and in keeping with the vision that motivated the Census of Marine Life, to ensure that a single global standard is adopted. As a consequence, the fish can talk to us wherever they may go. More broadly, the infrastructure created to host that array can be used to host a nearly unlimited array of additional ocean sensors, creating a powerful ocean observing system to record how the ocean changes-- and life in turn responds.
